In a recent development, Sacramento’s proposal to introduce a new rule requiring permits to hunt or trap coyotes was halted following strong opposition from farmers, ranchers, and hunters. The California Fish and Game Commission’s planned regulation would create additional hurdles for property owners seeking to protect their livestock and pets from coyote attacks.

The legislation faced criticism for imposing unnecessary bureaucratic procedures, which many believed would burden individuals dealing with wildlife predation. Critics pointed out that the requirement for a “depredation permit” has already presented challenges, with increased time and costs for those looking to safeguard their livestock and domestic animals.

The proposal also came under scrutiny for the process of its introduction. “The Commission was ready to take up this idea after holding initial meetings with barely any public notice,” noted an official statement. Such actions allegedly conflicted with California’s open-government laws, prompting Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick and Senator Megan Dahle to intervene by sending a letter to the Commission. This correspondence urged the withdrawal of the proposal from the agenda—a motion that was ultimately heeded.

Senator Megan Dahle expressed her gratitude to those who opposed the measure, saying, “I appreciate the farmers, ranchers, hunting groups and others who also spoke up against this misguided policy. Together, we made Sacramento listen.”

Megan Dahle, the 1st District Senator, emphasized ongoing vigilance and collaboration against similar proposals in the future.
