Senator Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) has requested the California State Senate to adjourn in memory of Lieutenant Commander Lou Conter, the last survivor of the USS Arizona from the Pearl Harbor attack. Dahle honored Conter, describing him as a highly decorated veteran who epitomized courage and service to his country.
Speaking about Conter, Senator Dahle reflected on the privilege of recognizing the late veteran in Sacramento last year. He expressed, “It was truly a highlight of my career to honor someone who gave so much for my freedoms and our nation. His sacrifice and commitment to duty will always be remembered as a shining example of true heroism. May we live by Conter's life mantra: ‘Don't panic.’”
Lou Conter's journey of remarkable service began during the attack on Pearl Harbor, where he emerged as one of the few survivors from the USS Arizona. His bravery and resilience during this dark period in American history were nothing short of inspirational. Conter went on to become a naval pilot, flying numerous combat missions in World War II and the Korean War.
In honor of Conter's legacy as an American hero, heartfelt condolences have been extended to his family. A service to commemorate his life will be held on April 23 in Nevada County, where he resided as a member of California's 1st Senate District. This district encompasses various counties, including Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Sierra, Siskiyou, and Shasta, as well as serving deferred areas of Tehama, Butte, Colusa, and Glenn counties.
