This week in Redding Metro history.

Died January 31, 1992

Mel Hein died on January 31, 1992, in San Clemente, California. Born in Redding, California, he played center for Washington State University from 1928 to 1930. Hein joined the New York Giants in 1931 and played until 1945, never missing a game. He was named NFL Most Valuable Player in 1938, the only offensive lineman to receive this award. Hein was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
