The Trinity County Cannabis Tax Ad Hoc Committee, created by the Board of Supervisors in 2025, is inviting cultivators, residents, and other stakeholders to attend public meetings to discuss the county’s cannabis tax. The committee was established following public feedback about challenges faced by licensed cultivators due to major changes in wholesale and retail markets.
Public suggestions have included reducing or eliminating taxes on certain product categories and modifying or removing tiered tax levels. Two meetings are scheduled: one on Friday, January 9 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Trinity County Fairgrounds, and another on Wednesday, January 14 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Weaverville Library.
The committee has an advisory role only. Its recommendations will be sent to the full Board of Supervisors. The county noted several constraints related to any potential changes:
The cannabis tax was approved by voters through a ballot measure, which means that significant changes would require voter approval before they could take effect.
Cannabis tax revenues go into the county’s General Fund. Since its introduction, these revenues have totaled more than $850,000, with $350,000 expected for the 2025–2026 budget year.
If revenue is reduced during the current fiscal year, there would need to be corresponding cuts or reallocations in other programs and services funded by the General Fund.
Community members who cannot attend in person can send written comments via email to cannabistaxinput@trinitycounty.org. All feedback will be reviewed as the committee develops formal recommendations for consideration by the Board of Supervisors.
