Following recent traffic studies, Caltrans has decided to raise speed limits on portions of state highways in Sierra City and Sierraville. This decision impacts Highway 49 in Sierra City and Highways 49 and 89 in Sierraville.

Caltrans determined current speed limits were too low based on data indicating that limits should correspond to the speed at which 85% of drivers travel. However, this change has sparked concerns among residents who fear higher limits may disrupt the peace in these communities.

Senator Megan Dahle addressed these concerns, stating, “I’ve heard concerns that higher limits will hurt these peaceful Sierra communities‚ so I want to make sure you aware of two public hearings coming up. These offer a chance to share your opinion before the decision is final.”

The first hearing related to Sierra City is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, at 1:30 p.m. in Downieville at the Board of Supervisors Chambers. The Sierraville hearing is set for Tuesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. in the Loyalton Social Hall.

Senator Dahle emphasized her commitment to public involvement in the decision-making process, stating, “I am committed to ensuring that Caltrans works hears residents’ voices and puts their safety first.”

Residents are encouraged to participate in the hearings to express their views before a final decision is made.
