CITY OF REDDING: Emmerson Family Makes Landmark Gift in Memory of Susan Emmerson

Redding

City of Redding issued the following announcement.

On Tuesday night, the Redding City Council voted to accept a significant gift in the memory of Susan Emmerson from her husband, George Emmerson and their sons Garet, Collin, Vaughn and Dane and their wives.

The $1 million gift will fund a public art installation that will serve as a unique landmark adjacent to the Stress Ribbon Bridge on the Sacramento River Trail. The gift will also provide new paint and paving for the Stress Ribbon Bridge structure and approaches, as well as long-term maintenance of the artwork and the surrounding area.

City Manager Barry Tippin, reflecting on the gift, said “We are humbled to receive this generous donation and to be entrusted to partner with the Emmerson family in creating an enduring tribute to Susan that will benefit the community for years to come.”

Mrs. Emmerson walked the River Trail regularly with her husband and friends.  She loved nature and art.  For many years, she shared her artistic talents with young students she taught at local schools - inspiring them to explore and create.  She generously volunteered her time and skills to many organizations over the years, including the Community Foundation of the North State, where she was a founding board member.

“A big heart like Susan’s – as evidenced by her lifetime of good works with so many nonprofits and schools - deserves to be honored in a big way. This special gift combines her loves of art, nature, healthy living, and quality time with family. Susan’s enduring spirit and legacy will inspire trail walkers for generations to come.” Ryan Denham, Community Foundation of the North State Board Chair.

Susan is deeply missed by her husband, George, their four sons, their daughters in law and their three grandchildren, but this gift, made through the Susan Emmerson Fund at The Community Foundation of the North State, will be a testament to the spirit of generosity Susan carried with her each day.
