The California Senate adjourned in memory of retired Lieutenant Commander Lou Conter, the last survivor of the attack on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Commander Conter, who was a constituent from the district, was honored for his service and sacrifice.
Commander Conter's legacy as a true American hero was highlighted by his dedication to the country and his courageous service. He was remembered for his remarkable contributions during World War II, including his role as a pilot with Navy Squadron VP-11, known as the "Black Cats."
"We will never forget his dedication to country, courage, and faithful service," a statement from the Senate expressed. The Senate also extended sincere condolences to the Conter family, recognizing the profound loss of a national hero.
The 1st Senate District of California, which comprises multiple counties, including Alpine, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Sierra, Siskiyou, and Shasta, came together to honor Commander Conter's memory. The district also serves deferred areas of Tehama, Butte, Colusa, and Glenn counties.
Commander Lou Conter's bravery and selflessness during pivotal moments in history, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor and the rescue mission in New Guinea, will forever be cherished and revered by the people he served.
